The Logical Arguments that God, Allah, Exists
The primary purpose of any true divine revelation is to introduce the creator to mankind. While the Quran addresses many topics, the most important topic is providing the proof of the existence of the Creator, Allah, and presenting the details of His unique attributes.
The conviction of Allah’s existence and His attributes is important even for Muslims, particularly those who are born in Islam and haven’t come to Islam thru serious study and analysis, for several reasons:
- It reinforces the foundation of the Muslim’s belief to ensure that it would not be shaken by any suspicion or doubt (شبهه) that others may raise.
- It trains the Muslim to present rational arguments to counter those who are confused about Allah’s existence.
- It ensures that the Muslim always has good thought about Allah even when one encounters events that appear to be contradicting with Allah’s ultimate mercy and justice
- It reinforces the sense of pride of being a Muslim and a believer in Allah.
An important difference between the followers of Islam and the followers of other religions is that the belief in God in Islam must be based on knowledge and not merely based on feelings or emotions. Allah says in Surah Muhammad:
“Know that there is no God but Allah” (Muhammad 47:19)
In Islam, the true belief in Allah must be based on certain conviction (إدراك جازم) to ensure that our heart is firm upon this belief without any wavering or doubt. Therefore, Muslim scholars consider that a Muslim is not considered a believer unless his belief in Allah is based on solid logical reasons.
A question may be raised about the uneducated layman who was born in a Muslim family, does he need to use his intellect to be convinced with God’s existence. Scholars say, yes because he must at least rationalize that Allah exists because everything that exists needs a maker and Allah is the maker of the universe.
Anyone who reads the Quran realize the major emphasis on discussing Allah, His attributes and presenting many proofs on why Allah is the only creator and ruler of the universe. You note that the name Allah is mentioned very frequently in the Quran, it is actually mentioned 2699 times. This means that Allah’s name is mentioned on average 4 to 5 times in every page of the Quran.
When we study the Quran, we realize that Allah has provided for us several logical arguments to convince any skeptic of His existence. We can consolidate these arguments in the form for 6 main ones and these are:
- The Cosmological argument
- The Design Argument
- The Dynamic Universe Argument
- The Morality Argument
- The Upper Limit Argument
- The Spiritual Experience Argument
- The Cosmological argument
The cosmological argument is based on the need for something to explain how the Universe existed. This argument proposes that the universe must owe its existence to an uncaused cause. This uncaused cause is understood to be “God.” What do I mean by the existence of the universe depends on an uncaused cause?
Let us look at an example, let us assume we have a line of soldiers standing behind each other and the command is that the one stranding in front of the line cannot shoot his gun unless he receives the order from the one behind him and the one behind him cannot give the order until he receives the order from the one behind and the 3rd person cannot give the order until he receives the order from the one behind him and so on.
The first person will never fire the gun unless the person at the end of the line gives the order without needing to take the order from anyone.
The Quran has many verses that present this argument by stating that Allah is the One who started the creation and created everything. As example,
“Say: “Is there of your partners one that originates the creation and then repeats it?” Say: “Allah originates the creation and then He repeats it. Then how are you deluded away (from the truth)?” (Yunus 10:34)
“He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in truth.” (Al-An’am 6:73)
“O mankind! worship your Lord, Who has created you and those before you, so that you may become God conscious.” (Al-Baqara 2:21)
“He created the heavens without any pillars that you can see; He placed mountains on earth lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. And We sent down rain from the sky, and caused to grow in it every noble pair. This is the Creation of Allah: now show Me what is created by those others, besides Him. Rather, the transgressors are in a clear error.” (Luqman 31:10-11)
- The Design Argument
While the cosmological argument suggests that every existing thing must have a creator to initiate its existence, the design argument is based on the observation that the world has clear evidence of intelligent design and everything has a purpose. Thus, inferring God’s existence is the best explanation for this observation. This argument is the most logical because if any rational person finds a watch with all its intricate connected parts, he would always consider that someone made it and for a specific purpose.
The design argument was used by the court in the case of the republican party against Nicholas Caputo, who was a member of the Democratic Party and was the public official responsible for establishing by random the positions of Democrats and Republicans candidates in the ballot. During Caputo’s tenure, the Democrats were placed in the top of the ballot 40 of 41 times. This made it far more likely that an undecided voter would vote for the Democratic candidate than for the Republican candidate.
The Republican Party filed suit arguing that he deliberately rigged the ballot to favor his own party. After predicting that the probability of picking the Democrats 40 out of 41 times was less than 1 in 50 billion, the court made a design inference and stated that it will be hard to find a person with any level of intelligence to accept the explanation of blind chance.
When we read the Quran, we find many verses emphasizing the perfection and the purpose of Allah’s different creations.
“Who has created the seven heavens one above another, you can see no fault in the creation of the Rahman. Then look again: “Can you see any rifts?” (Al-Mulk 67:3)
“Indeed, We created man in the best stature (mold).” (Al-Teen 95: 4)
“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for the people of understanding. (190) Who remember Allah standing and sitting, and (lying) on their sides, and ponder on the creation of the heavens and the earth (and say) “Our Lord, You have not created all this in vain. We proclaim Your purity. So, save us from the punishment of Fire. (Al-Imran 3:190-191)
- The Dynamic Universe Argument
While the design argument suggests that the intelligent design of the universe implies a creator. The dynamic universe argument suggests that the universe does not only needs creator but it also needs this creator to be in continuous watch and control over this universe because of its dynamic and interactive nature.
In 1963 Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published an article, “Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow,” which became a classic in the field of chaos research that is popularly known as the “Butterfly effect.” The theory suggests that a very small change in the initial conditions of some physical system can result in very large effects later in time. The example is that the fluttering of a butterfly’s wing in China can have cascading effect that produces a thunderstorm in New York.
This suggests that our universe is very interactive and thus requires continuous observation and control by its creator. The Quran is very clear that Allah is aware all the time of every minute thing that happens in the universe and He is always controlling the results. As example, Allah says:
“And with Him are the keys of the Unseen. No one knows them but He. He knows what is in the land and the sea. No leaf ever falls but that He knows about it, and there is no grain in the darkness of the earth, or anything that is wet or dry that is not recorded in a precise record.” (Al-Ana’am 6:59)
“And We created above you seven paths (heavens), and We were never neglectful of the creation.” (Al-Munenoon 23:17)
“Allah: There is no god but He, the Living, the All-Sustaining. Neither slumber overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him without His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them; while they encompass nothing of His knowledge, except what He wills. His Kursi (Chair) extends to the Heavens and to the Earth, and it does not weary Him to look after them. He is the All-High, the Supreme.” (Al-Baqara 2:255)
Another important observation related to the dynamic universe is its amazing order. This order indicates that the universe cannot only be created but it must also be re-created. This conclusion is required by the second law of thermodynamics which is one of the most fundamental laws of nature to explain the order of the universe.
The second law of thermodynamics introduces a state variable called entropy. Entropy has a variety of physical interpretations, including measuring the statistical disorder of the system. A major implication of the second law is that time naturally flows in a way that increases disorder.
This law states that for a non-reversable system, the entropy increases, meaning the level of disorder increases by time. However, for a reversable system the entropy remains the same, meaning that the original order remains the same.
Observing the precise order in the universe after all these years, only suggests that the process of creation is reversable and thus cannot be random or by chance. This point of reversable process of the creation is clearly stated in the Quran in many verses. As example, Allah says:
“Say: “Is there of your partners one that originates the creation and then repeats it?” Say: “Allah originates the creation and then He repeats it. Then how are you deluded away (from the truth)?” (Yunus 10:34)
“And Allah has caused you to grow out of the earth. (17) Then He will send you back into it and will bring you forth once again.” (Nooh 71:18)
And he sets up a parable about Us and forgets his own creation. He says: “Who will give life to these bones after they are decayed?” (78) Say: “They will be revived by the One Who created them for the first time! And He is fully aware of every creation!” (Yaseen 36:78-793)
- The Morality Argument
The morality argument is based on the observation of normative moral order that all people have independent of their background, race or beliefs. The presence of aspects of common morality among all people is best explained by God placing it in them and thus God must exist. Secular accounts cannot explain the source of the common morality.
Since there is apparent connection between morality and religion, this supports the argument that moral truths require a religious foundation that supports the existence of God. The Quran has many verses that support the reality that Allah is the One who instilled the moral code in all human beings.
“Verily, We have created man from mixed Nutfah (drops) in order to try him, so We made him hearer and seer. (2) Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.” (Al-Insan 76:2-3)
“Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most-High, (1) Who has created (everything), and then proportioned it; (2) And who determined a measure (for everything), then guided (it).” (Al-Ala 87:3)
“Does he think that none sees him? (7) Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? (8) And a tongue and a pair of lips? (9) And shown him the two ways (good and evil)?” (Al-Balad 90:7-10)
- The Upper Limit Argument
The Limit argument is based on the premise that our mind can conceive an entity beyond which nothing greater can be conceived. Therefore, there must an entity whose attributes cannot conceivably be improved upon and this entity exists both in our understanding and in reality. This entity is God.
The Quran has many verses that describe Allah as the One whose attributes cannot conceivably be improved upon because they represent the ultimate perfection.
The Unique, nothing like Him
“There is nothing like Him, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer” (Al-Shura 42:11)
The One sought by everyone and He is completely self sufficient
“Say: He is Allah the One and Only; Allah is besought by all but needing none; He neither begot anyone, nor He is begotten; And there is nothing like Him.”. (112:1-45)
The Most-Knowledgeable
“Your God is Allah, other than whom there is no god, He has full knowledge of all things.” (Taha 20:98)
The Eternal
“And put your trust in the Ever Living One Who does not die,.” (Al-Furqan 25:589)
The holder of the Throne Relative to which everything in the universe is infinitesimal
“And He is the Most-Forgiving, Most Loving (14) The Master of the Throne of Glory, (15) He is ever doer all that He intends.” (Al-Buroog 85:14-16)
The biggest thing that Allah created is the Arsh (throne of God): Abu Dhar (أبي ذر الغفاري) said that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The seven heavens in comparison to the Kursi (footstool) is nothing but like a ring thrown in a desert, and the excellence of the ʽArsh (Throne of Allah) over the Kursi is like the excellence of that desert over that ring.
Imagine the size of the Kursi (footstool) relative to observable universe than contains over two trillion galaxies and then imagine the size of throne
The Ultimate Provider
“Allah bestows His abundance on whom He wish without measure.” (Al-Baqara 2:212)
Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (أَبِي ذَرٍّ الْغِفَارِيِّ) from the Prophet (PBUH) said that Allah said:
O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, then that would not decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ocean when a needle is dipped into it. [Muslim]
- The Spiritual Experience Argument
The spiritual religious experience of many cannot be ignored as basis for the existence of God. Many people, past and present, share testimonials about feeling God’s love, guidance, presence, answers to prayers, etc. Muslims who have this experience will say “There are no words to explain how I feel when I pray or read the Quran, and the only way you can ever understand this, is if you experience it yourself.”
Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111 A.D.) said that the ultimate ecstasy is not found in any physical thing, but rather lies in discovering through personal experience one’s identity with the Ultimate Reality (Allah). This experience is an inward discovery that depends not on logic but on intuition.
In addition, the Quran teaches us that Allah has communicated to others who were not prophets thru revelations and these were thru spiritual personal experiences, Allah says:
“And when I (Allah) revealed the disciples [of Jesus] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.” (Al-Maeda 5:111)
“And We inspired the mother of Musa (Moses), (telling): “Suckle him, but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of the Messengers.” (Al-Qasas 28:7)
“And when My servants ask you about Me. I am indeed near. I respond to the supplication of the supplicant when he calls on Me. So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led a right.” (Al-Baqara 2:186)
This verse affirms that Allah is near us and He communicates with us if we call upon him.
The Quran also reports of a clear spiritual experience by the magicians who were challenging Prophet Moses. This spiritual experience transformed them to be so righteous that they were willing to stand against the Pharaoh and all the punishment he inflicted on them.
They said: “We will never prefer you over the clear signs that have come to us, and over Him (Allah) Who created us. So, decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree in this worldly life. (72) “Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive our sins, and for the magic you compelled us to perform. And Allah is the Best and Everlasting.” (Taha 20:72-73)
