Extending Your Life & The Eight Gates of Heaven

Imam Abu Musa Al-Madini (أبو موسى المدينى) (161 H -234 H) has book of hadeath that focused on the long hadeath.  In his collection of hadeath book At-Targheen Al-Tarheeb (الترغيب والترهيب) (Inspiration and intimidation/ Instilling pleasure and Fear) , he reported that  Abdurrahman ibn Samura (عبد الرحمن بن سمرة) said:

While we were in Al-Sufa in Al-Madina (this is the place where the Prophet (PBUH) designated in his Masjid as shelter for the homeless among the Muslims to stay in it), the messenger of Allah (PBUH) came and said: I saw something astonishing last night: I saw a man from my nation who the angel of death came to seize his soul, but his good treatment of his parents prevented the angel of death and caused him to leave.

This hadeath is long and in it the Prophet (PBUH) talked about 17 people from his nation who were saved because of different good things that they used to do. You can find the English translation of the hadeath in the book entitled “The Soul” (الروح) by Imam ibn Al-Qyyem All-Jawziah (ابن قيم الجوزية).

I want to focus on this part because it may cause confusion regarding the belief that our life is predestined and when the time comes, there will be no delays as Allah says:

“For every people there is an appointed time. When their appointed time comes, they can neither delay it for an hour nor can they advance it.” (Al-Araf 7:34)

“Say: “I have no power to bring a harm or a benefit to myself except what Allah may will. For every nation, there is an appointed time; when their appointed time  comes, they can neither delay it for an hour nor can they advance it.” (Yunus 10:49)

“If Allah were to seize the people for their injustice, He would have spared a single creature on earth, but He postpones them for an appointed time. So, when their appointed time comes, they can neither delay it for an hour nor can they advance it.” (Al-Nahl 16:61)

“And Allah will never give respite to anyone once his appointed time comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.’ (Al-Nunafiqoon 63:11).

If our lives are predestined, then how can our life be extended according to the Hadith.  Does this hadith violate the Quran?    But this is not the only hadith, there another hadith that also affirms that we can extend our lives.   Anas ibn Malik (أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

Whoever is pleased to have his provision expanded and his life span extended, let him keep good relations with his family.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The question remains, do these two hadith contradict the predestination of our lives as we understand from the Quran.   The answer is no if we assemble other verses to provide a complete picture.   Allah says in Surat Al-Rad:

‘’ And indeed, We sent Messengers before you, and granted them wives and offspring. And it is not for a Messenger to bring a sign without the will of Allah. For every appointed time there is a book.”  (Al-Rad 13:38)

This verse suggests that the life of everyone of us is written not as one number or in one line, it is documented in a book. But there are two records, one record is given to the angel of death while the complete record is with Allah.   The book with Allah includes multiple lives with each one is based on what we do, so if you do the righteous deed that deserves extending your life, Allah will change the record in the book that the angel of death has.   Allah says in Surat al-Rad.

“Allah wipes off what He wills and affirms (what He wills), and with Him is the Mother Book. (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz).” (Al-Rad 13:39)

So, we still have chance to extend our lives to do the right things to deserve to enter paradise.  The question is from which gate will be entering.   While there is no place in the Quran in which Allah gives explicit number of gates of paradise, scholars inferred from one verse that Paradise has eight gates.

So, while the number of gates of Paradise is not given in the Quran, the number of gates of Hell is explicitly mentioned in the Quran and it is seven, Allah says:

“”And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all. (43) “It (Hell) has seven gates, for each gate there is an appointed portion (of sinners).” (Al-Hijr 15:43:44)

But how the scholars derived that Paradise has eight gates.   They inferred this number from the Quran by analyzing the use of the letter “Waw” (و) in the Quran.   You probably will say how can the letter “Waw” (و) used to identify the number of gates of Heaven.

This is an interesting analysis. Scholars identified three uses for the letter “Waw” (و) in the Quan.

First: It is used for an oath (واو القسم) such as:

By the sun and its brightness; (1) By the moon as it follows it (the sun); (2) By the day as it shows up (the sun’s) brightness; (3) By the night as it conceals it (the sun); (4) By the heaven and Him Who built it; (5) By the earth and Him Who spread it, (6) And by Nafs (a soul), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; (Al-Shams 91:1-7)

By the forenoon (1) By the night when it becomes still. (Ad-Dhuha 93:1-2)

Second: It is used as the conjunction “and” (واو العطف) such as:

“Indeed, We sent Nuh and Ibrahim,” (Al-Hadid 57:26)

“O you who have believed! Bow down, and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord and do good that you may be successful.” (Al-Hajj 22:77)

“O you who believe! When you intend to offer the prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles.” (Al-Maeda 5: 6)

As a side issue, linguistics as well as Jurist differed regarding the use of this “waw”, whether it implies sequential arrangement or it merely provides differentiation.  Those who consider that the “Waw” implies sequence such as Imam Abu Hanifa (أبي حنيفة), the Wudu verse means that the steps (ترتيب أفعال الوضوء) mentioned must be done in sequence.  But those who consider that the “Waw” is merely for differentiation such as Abu Yousef and Mohammad ibn Al-Hassan, (أبي يوسف ومحمد بن الحسن) who were the students of Imam Abu Hanifa do not consider the sequence in the Wudu as necessary.  Therefore. Some jurists consider the sequential steps of the Wudu are obligatory (فريضة), others consider them preferred (مستحب) and a third group consider them as optional.

These two uses of the letter “Waw” are obvious, the third use of the letter “Waw” is interesting:

Third: the letter “Waw” is used to refer to the number 8 (واو الثمانية).   We note that in several verses in the Quran list items without “waw” between them except before the 8th item.  The following are examples:

“Some will say, “(They were) three, the fourth is their dog,” and some will say, “Five, the sixth is their dog, just making conjectures.” And others will say, “Seven and the eighth is their dog.” Say, “My Lord knows best about their number.” (Al-Kahf 18:22)

(The Triumphant) are 1) those who turn repentant (to Allah), 2) those who serve (Him), 3) those who praise (Him), 4) those who fast, 5) those who bow down, 6) those who fall prostrate (in worship), 7) those who enjoin the right and who forbid the wrong 8) and those who keep the limits (ordained) of Allah.  (Al-Tuba 9:112)

“It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you, 1) Muslims, 2) believers, 3) obedient, 4) turning to Allah in repentance, 5), steadfast in worship, 6) fasting, 7) previously married 8) and virgins.” (Al-Tahrim 66:5)

But, how is this application of the “Waw” used to derive the number of gates of Heaven. It is thru the analysis of verses 71 and 73 from Surat Al-Zumur

“And those who disbelieved are driven towards Jahannam (Hell) in groups, until when they reach it, its gates are opened, and its keepers will say,” (Al-Zumur 39:71)

Note here that when the disbelievers were driven to Hell, the gates are opened with no “Waw” before the phrase “the gates are opened”.  But when you look at verse 73:

“And those who maintained the Taqwa of their Lord are driven unto the Garden in troops when they reach it, and its gates are opened, and its keepers will say” (Al-Zumur 39:73)

Note that here the letter “Waw came before the phrase “its gates are opened”.  Based on the consideration that the number that comes after the “Waw” is eight, scholars concluded that the number of gates of heaven is eight.   This number is actually confirmed by a hadith.   It is narrated by Ubaadah (عبادة) and reported in Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and that ‘Esa is the slave of Allah and the son of His slave women and His word that He bestowed on Mary and a spirit from Him, and that paradise is truth, and that fire is truth, Allah will make him enter from any of the eight gates of paradise that he wishes.”” (Bukhari 3180).

Someone may wonder what is the width of each of these eight gates to allow all those believers to enter.   The Prophet (PBUH) has a lengthy hadeath narrated by Abu Hurayrah and reported by Imam Muslim in which the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“By the one in whose Hands is my soul, the distance between the two doors of each gate of Heaven is between Mecca and Hajar or as the distance between Mecca and Busra.” (Muslim)

This hadeath specifies the width of each gate of the eighth gates of Hevean.  The three locations specified in the hadeath are Mecca, Hajar and Busra.   Mecca is a city and Busra is a city that is located in the north of Mecca on the border between Jorden and Syria.  One can measure the distance between the two cities Mecca and Busra and the distance using google maps is 794 miles.

But Hajar is a province located in the east of the Arabian Peninsula that includes Qatar and Bahrain.   The question is how to measure the distance between the city of Mecca and the province of Hajar, do you measure to its beginning or its end.  The answer came in the use of the article “Ma” (ما) in the Arabic language.  It is used in the headeath ( ما بين مكة وهجر) and it is called (ما الموصولية) “the connected “Ma”, and it implies the inclusion (الاستغراق). Therefore, the proper distance to be measured needs to be the distance between Mecca and the farthest edge of the province Hajr.  Surprisingly, using google maps, this distance is also 794 miles which is the same as the distance between Mecca and Busra.

Based on this hadeath the width of each gate in Heaven is 794 miles and this is verified by the two distances that the Prophet (PBUH) specified.  The amazing part is that there is no way anyone could have measured these distances from the land since on land you don’t travel in straight line, they can only be measured using aerial measurements.

These eight gates have names indicating the attributes of the people who will be entering from them.  Several of the names of these gates were identified by hadeath of the Prophet (PBUH).  Some of the names will inferred to by the scholars from indications in the references.

In a hadeath narrated by Abu Huryrah (أبي هريرة) and reported by Bukhari and Muslim the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Whoever gives two kinds (of things or property) in charity for Allah’s Cause, will be called from the gates of Paradise and will be addressed, ‘O slaves of Allah! Here is prosperity’. So, whoever was amongst the people who used to offer their prayers, will be called from the gate of the prayer; and whoever was amongst the people who used to participate in Jihad, will be called from the gate of Jihad; and whoever was amongst those who used to observe fasts, will be called from the gate of Ar-Rayyan; whoever was amongst those who used to give in charity, will be called from the gate of charity” . [Bukhari and Muslim].

Sahl (RA) reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“In Paradise there is a gate called Al-Rayyaan, through which those who used to fast will enter on the Day of Resurrection. It will be said, ‘Where are those who fasted?’ They will get up, and none will enter it but them. When they have entered, it will be locked, and no one else will enter” (Bukhari).

Also, Abu Huryrah (أبي هريرة) and reported by Bukhari and Muslim the Prophet (PBUH) said:

Allah Says: “O Muhammad! Let those of your followers who have no accounts, enter through the gate of al-Ayman, (the gate that lies on the right); and they

are the partners with the people in the other gates

It is reported by Ahmad that Al-Hassan said:

“Allah has a door in paradise, no one enters from it except the one who forgave injustice.”

So, the names of these 8 gates are:

  1. Bāb al-Ṣalāh (the gate of prayers): This gate is for those who were punctual and attentive in prayer.
  2. Bāb al-Jihād (The gate of struggle): This gate is for those who sacrificed their lives while they are struggling for the causes sanctioned by Allah.
  3. Bāb al-Ṣadaqah (The gate of charity): This gate is for those who are frequent in giving charity.
  4. Bāb al-Rayyān (The gate of fasting) This gate is for those who kept their fast with sincerity.
  5. Bāb al-Ḥajj (The gate of pilgrimage): This gate is for those who participated in the annual pilgrimage.
  6. Baab Al-Kaazimeen Al-Ghaiz Wal Aafina Anin Naas: (The gate if those who suppress their anger and forgive) This gate is for those who were able to control and suppress their anger and were forgiving towards their brethren.
  7. Baab Al-Ayman (The gate of the right): This gate is for those who were steadfast in their faith in Allah and trusted His decisions for them and lived a life that was a fulfillment of His commands.
  8. Baab Al-Dhikr (The gate of Allah’s remembrance): This gate is for those who constantly in remembrance of Allah and did Dhikr.

It is natural for Muslims to wonder what will happen to those people who have earned the privilege to enter Paradise through more than one gate. Abu Bakr had the same question, and he eagerly asked the Prophet Muhammad, “Will there be anyone who will be called from all these gates?”

The Prophet answered him, “Yes. And I hope you will be one of them.”

We pray to Allah that we also be one of them.  We still have time to earn this honor if we take respite from our designated time in earth thru kindness to our parents and keeping good relations with our family per the two hadith that we discussed early.

One of you may say, but the parents of someone of us have already died.  How can we show kindness towards them?

A man from among the companions asked Prophet Mohammad (PBUH):

“O Messenger of Allah, is there anything left from the goodness I owe my parents after their death?”   The Prophet (PBUH) replied:

“Yes, four things:

  • Pray and ask forgiveness for them five time per day by saying:

My Lord, forgive me, my parents, My Lord have mercy on raised me when I was small.

2) Be kind to their friends.

3) Fulfill their pledges.

4) And maintain the ties of kinship that come only from their direction”. (Ahmad, Abu Dawood &ibn Majah)
