Theme of Surat At-Takwir (التّکویر) (Folding in Ball Shape) (81)
Surah At-Takwir presents vivid signs of the Day of Judgment, divided into two phases: six events precede the Day, and six that occur on the Day itself. The Surah portrays cosmic upheaval, human accountability, and divine truth, urging us to reflect, repent, and realign our lives before the moment when all truths are revealed, and every soul is judged for its deeds.
The Surah opens with the six signs that signal the approach of the Day of the Judgement:
“When the sun is folded up. (1) When the stars are dimmed. (2) When the mountains are set in motion. (3) When ten-month pregnant she-camels are abandoned. (4) When wild beasts are herded together. (5) When the seas are set ablaze.” (81:1-6)
The Sun is Folded up: Its huge flares whose temperature is millions of degrees and extending to reach 30 million miles will be eliminated. Its light will be extinguished, plunging the world into darkness
Stars Lose Light: Billions of stars will lose their brilliance and scatter, leaving the universe in darkness.
Mountains Set in Motion: Earth’s surface will destabilize, leading to massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Pregnant Camels Abandoned: To the Arabs, a pregnant camel nearing birth was highly values. Abandoning it symbolizes the collapse of societal values and priorities. An alternate interpretation links “عِشَار” (camels) to “معاشرة” (companionship), suggesting even human relationships will be forsaken.
Wild Beasts Gather: Creatures that normally avoid each other will congregate—opposite their instinct—just as humans will abandon their natural desire for community.
Seas Set Ablaze: A reversal of nature where water becomes fire—signifying the end of all life.
These verses present a vivid picture of cosmic upheaval and total disruption preceding the Day of Judgment.
The second set of six signs will occur on the Day of Judgment:
When the souls are paired. (7) When the buried girl is asked, (8) for what sin she was killed. (9) When the records are laid open. (10) When the sky is stripped off. (11) When Hellfire is set ablaze. (12) And When paradise is brought near. “ (81:7-13)
Souls paired: Some scholars interpret this as the grouping of souls—righteous with righteous, wicked with wicked. However, another possible interpretation is that the souls (nafs) will be reunited with new, eternal bodies fit for reward or punishment. The people of Paradise will be purified of all negative emotions. A parable of this is a hard drive of a computer being placed in a new device
Questioning the Unjustly Killed: Justice begins with the most innocent—like the infant girl buried alive; highlighting that no crime or injustice will go unaddressed. This crime of burying people alive echoes in modern warfare where children perish beneath rubble. No perpetrator or passive observer who can stop these crimes will escape judgment.
Records Laid Open: Every deed, thought, and intention will be exposed for judgment.
Sky Stripped Away: The protective barrier of the sky will be removed, making the hidden visible. This verse may carry a deeper meaning when considered in light of the concept of multiple universes, as suggested in the final verse of Surah At-Talaq. Imagine that each universe is veiled by a thin, protective layer that separates it from others. On the Day of Judgment, these veils will be removed, exposing all realms and revealing the fate of every creation within them.
Hell Set Ablaze and Paradise Brought Near: Everyone will see their final destination, fully aware of the deeds they have brought forth.
“Every soul will know what it has brought (of deeds). “(81:14)
The Surah moves with three oaths using cosmic evidence to allow the skeptics to reflect on such marvels as proof of Allah’s dominion.
“I swear by the retreating stars. (15) Those that move swiftly and hide. (16) And by the night as it recedes. (17) And by the morning as it breathes (as if the night is holding its breath and at the morning it starts breathing).” (81:15-18)
These oaths point to astronomical phenomena. Consider the stars, some over 100,000 times the size of the sun, moving at speeds exceeding 240,000 km/s. Their movement and order are signs of divine power and precision. These oaths refer to highly scientific phenomena highlighting the importance of advancing the subject of astronomy to appreciate the signs embedded in the universe.
The Surah moves to affirm that the Quran is delivered by the noble angel Jibril and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ speaks the truth—not from madness or satanic influence, and that the message (the Quran) is authentic and divinely protected.
This is the word of a noble messenger (Jibril), (19) full of power and held in honor by the Lord of the Throne. (20) He is obeyed (in heaven by the rest of the angels) and he is trustworthy. (21) And your companion (Mohammad) is not mad. (22) He saw him on the clear horizon. (23) He does not withhold what is revealed to him from the Unseen. (24) This (message) is not the word of an outcast devil. (81:19-25)
The Surah concludes with a rhetorical question. Having been told the truth, where else can you turn to find the truth? The Quran is a reminder for all who seek guidance, but true acceptance is only by Allah’s will.
“So, where are you going? (26) This (the Quran) is nothing but a reminder to the worlds (mankind and jinn). (27) To whoever among you wills to stay on the straight path. (28) But you cannot will unless Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, wills.” (81:26-29)
