Success in Eternity

Theme of Surat Al-Qiyamah (القِیَامَة) (The Resurrection) (75)

Surah Al-Qiyamah offers a powerful reminder of the reality of resurrection and the certainty of divine accountability.  It serves as a basic resource in Dawah to refute those who deny the afterlife. It offers strong arguments to prove not only the possibility but also the necessity of resurrection, using rational, moral, and spiritual arguments.

The Surah begins with a powerful oath affirms the certainty of the day of resurrection and the inescapability of its judgment:

By the Day of Resurrection. (75:1)

The Surah then confronts the mindset of those who reject resurrection—not due to intellectual doubt, but due to a desire to live without moral restraint:

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones (3). 4 In fact, We are able to make whole his very fingertips. (4) Yet man wants to deny what lies ahead of him.  (75:3-5)

This response emphasizes not only the feasibility of resurrection but Allah’s precision in re-creating every detail—down to the fingerprints.

The Surah then shifts to the Day of Judgment, where each person will be confronted with their deeds:

On that Day, man will be told what he put first and what he put last. (13) Truly, man is a clear witness against himself, (14) despite all the excuses he may put forward. (15) Do not move your tongue to receive in hurry. (16) It is our responsibility to collect it and read it. (17) When We read it follow our readings.  (18) Then it is our responsibility to make it clear. (75:13-19)

Note: Verses 16 to 19 are often interpreted as addressing the Prophet’s eagerness to memorize the revelation by trying to repeat the revelation while it is still underway. He is told not to rush in repeating the revelation, as Allah will ensure its collection and explanation in your heart. However, the verses could also be seen, in context, as describing the Day of Judgment, when the record is read and the person and he is asked to listen in silence until it is fully recited and explained:

The Surah paints a vivid scene of death for those who denied the truth:

“Truly, when the soul reaches the collarbone; (26) when it is said, ‘Could any charm-healer save him now?’ (27) when he knows it is the final parting; (28) when the legs are intertwined together: (29) (it will be said to him) on that day you will be driven to your Lord.” (75:26-30)

This moment of helplessness and final realization is a warning to all who ignore the truth in life. The dying soul is surrounded by people, but no one can help—only Allah remains.

The Surah concludes by reinforcing its opening message: man will not be left without purpose or accountability. The final verses invite reflection on human origin to prove Allah’s power to resurrect:

Does man think he will be left unchecked? (36) Was he not just a drop of spilt-out sperm, (37) which became a clinging form, which was created and made in due proportion. (38) and from it made the two sexes, the male and the female, (39) Does He who can do this not able to bring the dead back to life? (75:36-40)
