Theme of Surat Al-Jinn (الجنّ) (72)

The central theme of Surat Al-Jinn is the universality of the Quran as a divine message sent to both humans and jinn, affirming that Islam addresses all intelligent beings—both visible and invisible. The Surah emphasizes that both humans and jinn are accountable to Allah and have free will to believe or disbelieve.

The Surah opens by revealing that a group of jinn listened to the Prophet (PBUH) as he recited the Qur’an. They immediately recognized it as divine guidance and committed to spreading it among their kind:

قُلۡ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسۡتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا سَمِعۡنَا قُرۡءَانًا عَجَبً۬ا (١) يَہۡدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشۡدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ‌ۖ وَلَن نُّشۡرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدً۬ا (٢)

“Say: ‘It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened (to the Quran) and said: we have heard a wondrous Quran. (1) It guides to the right path, and we have believed in it, and we will never associate partners with our Lord.” (72:1-2)

Upon hearing the Quran, the jinn expressed astonishment that both humans and jinn have lied about Allah by saying:

وَأَنَّهُ ۥ تَعَـٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَـٰحِبَةً۬ وَلَا وَلَدً۬ا (٣) وَأَنَّهُ ۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيہُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطً۬ا (٤) وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلۡإِنسُ وَٱلۡجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبً۬ا (٥)

“Exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has taken neither a wife nor a son. (3) And the fool among us used to say absurd things about Allah. (4) And we thought that no human or jinn would ever lie about Allah.” (72:3-5)

 Lying about Allah is described in the Qur’an as a grave sin. Imam Al-Ghazali noted:

” لئن يرتكب العوام الكبائر فذلك أهون من أن يقولوا على الله ما لا يعلمون ” .

For the common people to commit major sins is less dangerous than for them to speak about Allah without knowledge.”

 The Surah warns against seeking protection from jinn, a practice some humans engaged in, which only led to greater humiliation:

وَأَنَّهُ ۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمۡ رَهَقً۬ا (٦)

“Some men from among humans sought refuge with males among the jinn, but they (jinn)only increased them in humiliation.” (72:6)   

This Ayat is a warning from the righteous Jinn to humans against taking refuge or seeking help from the Jinn.

The righteous jinn show remarkable wisdom and humility in response to the Qur’an’s message:

وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعۡنَا ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ‌ۖ فَمَن يُؤۡمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخۡسً۬ا وَلَا رَهَقً۬ا (١٣) وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلۡمُسۡلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلۡقَـٰسِطُونَ‌ۖ فَمَنۡ أَسۡلَمَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ تَحَرَّوۡاْ رَشَدً۬ا  (١٤)َأَمَّا ٱلۡقَـٰسِطُونَ فَكَانُواْ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبً۬

“When we heard the guidance (the Quran), we believed in it. Whoever believes in his Lord shall have no fear of loss or humiliation. (13)  Among us some are Muslims, and among us are the unjust “Al-Qasitoun”. Those who embraced Islam, have found the Right Path.  (14) And as for the unjust “Al-Qasitoun”, they will be the fuel for Hell.” (72:13-15)The Wisdon of the ROghtous Jinn

 A linguistic note: Although the words Muqsit (مُقْسِط) and Qasit (قاسِط) share the same root (ق-س-ط), they have opposite meanings:

  • Muqsit (مُقْسِط): Just, fair. إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ “Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Al-Mumtahina 60:8)
  • Qasit (قاسِط): Unjust, oppressive. وَأَمَّا ٱلْقَاسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا “As for the unjust, they will be firewood for Hell.” (Al-Jinn 72:15)

 The Surah closes by shifting from the unseen world of jinn to the Prophet’s message to mankind. It affirms the Prophet’s limited knowledge of the unseen and his sole role as a messenger:

قُلۡ إِنَّمَآ أَدۡعُواْ رَبِّى وَلَآ أُشۡرِكُ بِهِۦۤ أَحَدً۬ا (٢٠) قُلۡ إِنِّى لَآ أَمۡلِكُ لَكُمۡ ضَرًّ۬ا وَلَا رَشَدً۬ا (٢١) قُلۡ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌ۬ وَلَنۡ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلۡتَحَدًا (٢٢) إِلَّا بَلَـٰغً۬ا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ‌ۚ وَمَن يَعۡصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُ ۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيہَآ أَبَدًا (٢٣)

Say, “I only call upon my Lord and do not associate anyone with Him.” (20) Say, “I have no power to harm or guide you.” (21) Say, “No one can protect me from Allah, and I have no refuge except in Him. (22) My duty is only to convey from Allah His messages.” And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, for him is the fire of Hell; wherein they will live forever. (72: 20-23)

 The Prophet is also instructed to acknowledge his limited knowledge of the timing of the Hereafter:

قُلۡ إِنۡ أَدۡرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ۬ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمۡ يَجۡعَلُ لَهُ ۥ رَبِّىٓ أَمَدًا (٢٥) عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ فَلَا يُظۡهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيۡبِهِۦۤ أَحَدًا (٢٦) إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرۡتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍ۬ فَإِنَّهُ ۥ يَسۡلُكُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِ يَدَيۡهِ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِۦ رَصَدً۬ا (٢٧) لِّيَعۡلَمَ أَن قَدۡ أَبۡلَغُواْ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّہِمۡ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيۡہِمۡ وَأَحۡصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىۡءٍ عَدَدَۢا (٢٨)

Say, I do not know whether what you are promised is near, or my Lord has set it for a distant time.’  (25) [He is] the Knower of the Unseen, He reveals it to none. (26) but to a messenger of His choice whom He surrounds with watching guards before and behind him.  (27) To ensure that they have delivered the messages of their Lord. He fully encompasses all that is with them and keeps count of everything. (72: 25-28)
