The Seven Prerequisites for Salvation

الحمد لله نحمده ونستعينة ونستغفره، ونعوذ بالله من شرور أنفسنا، ومن سيئات أعمالنا ، وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له ، وأشهد أن سيدنا محمداً عبده ورسوله ، اللهم صلِّ وسلم وبارك على سيدنا محمد وعلى آله وأصحابه  ومن تبعه إلى يوم الدين.

A key purpose of divine revelation is to give man the prerequisites for his salvation and his eternal place after the end of life on this earth.  Therefore, you find that every religion specifies certain conditions that allow its followers to make claims who will be rewarded with eternal bliss in paradise and who will be punished with eternal misery in Hell.

The clarity of these prerequisites in the mind of the followers of every religion must be made based on clear quotes from the revelation that they follow.  They should not be based on personal opinion to appease those who don’t follow this religion and thus mislead them.

Unfortunately, you may find some well- educated Muslims make compromises in addressing this question but suggesting that the prerequisites for salvation are believing in Allah and doing righteous deeds even if the person does not believe in Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).  By this, they do not consider believing in Mohammad (PBUH) as messenger of Allah and the seal of the Prophets as absolute necessity. 

In this talk, I plan to Insha’Allah address this issue to ensure that we present our beliefs accurately without any compromises that can mislead others. Let us look at the prerequisites that Allah specified for achieving paradise.

The first prerequisite is a universal condition for any person who has heard of any divine revelation and this is believing in one God and not taking any associates with Him.  This condition is clearly stated in verse 48 of Surat Al-Araf:

 

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٲلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ‌ۚ وَمَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰٓ إِثۡمًا عَظِيمًا (٤٨)

“Verily, Allah does not forgive that a partner is ascribed to Him (in worship), but He forgives anything short of that for whosoever He wills.  Whoever ascribes a partner to Allah commits a tremendous sin.” (Al-Nisa 4:48)

 

So, anyone who believes that Allah has partners of any form will never be forgiven and thus his eternal abode will be Hell. 

 

In addition to believing on One God, two additional prerequisites are specified and these are believing in the Day of Judgement and doing righteous deeds.  Allah says addressing the follower of all religions:

 

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱلَّذِينَ هَادُواْ وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ وَٱلصَّـٰبِـِٔينَ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحً۬ا فَلَهُمۡ أَجۡرُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ وَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡہِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ

Indeed, those who believe, and those who are Jews, Christians, and Sabaeans – whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous deeds – surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall be no fear upon them, nor they shall grieve.” (Al-Baqara 2:62)

The fourth prerequisite is accepting all the divine commands that are stated in the revelation and not to cherry pick certain commands to accept and others to reject, Allah says:

أَفَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِبَعۡضِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَتَكۡفُرُونَ بِبَعۡضٍ۬‌ۚ فَمَا جَزَآءُ مَن يَفۡعَلُ ذَٲلِكَ مِنڪُمۡ إِلَّا خِزۡىٌ۬ فِى ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا‌ۖ وَيَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰٓ أَشَدِّ ٱلۡعَذَابِ‌ۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ (٨٥)

“Do you believe in some parts of the book and disbelieve in others?  So what is the reward for those among you who do that; except disgrace in this life and on the Day of Judgment they shall face the most severe punishment. For Allah is not unmindful of what you do.” (Al-Baqara 2:85)

The verse makes it clear that Allah does not accept partial belief in His revelation.  This does not mean that a person will be following all the commands, but he should accept all the commands and repent for any command that He accepts but does not follow.  As example, a Muslim must accept that 5 prayers per day are obligatory even if he does not pray but if he rejects the obligation of the five prayers, he will be condemned to the Hell fire. Obviously, a person who accepts the obligation of a command and does not follow it is sinful and he needs to repent and strive to fulfill lit, but his deficiencies will not expel him from the folds of Allah’s mercy.

 

The fifth prerequisite is to accept all the Messengers whom Allah clearly identified and to not to differentiate between them, Allah says:

 

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَكۡفُرُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَيُرِيدُونَ أَن يُفَرِّقُواْ بَيۡنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَيَقُولُونَ نُؤۡمِنُ بِبَعۡضٍ۬ وَنَڪۡفُرُ بِبَعۡضٍ۬ وَيُرِيدُونَ أَن يَتَّخِذُواْ بَيۡنَ ذَٲلِكَ سَبِيلاً (١٥٠) أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ حَقًّ۬ا‌ۚ وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابً۬ا مُّهِينً۬ا (١٥١)

“Surely, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make division between Allah and His Messengers saying, “We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between. (150) They are the true disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.” (Al-Nisa 4:150-151)

This point is critical because it means that even if one follows a messenger but rejects the succeeding messenger will be considered as disbeliever and is condemned to Hell.   Because this point is very critical, Allah will always include news about any succeeding messenger in the preceding revelation.  As example, information about Prophet Isa (Jesus) must be clearly included in the revelation given to Prophet Musa and information about Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) must be clearly included in both the revelations to Prophet Musa and Prophet Isla.  This is to ensure that those who reject the succeeding messenger are doing it intentionally and not out of ignorance or confusion. 

This prerequisite is straight forwards and there should be no confusion about it.  Any follower of Prophet Musa who is alive after Prophet Isa is sent and rejects Prophet Isa and continues to follow Prophet Musa is disbeliever.  The same things for anyone who rejects Prophet Mohammad and continue to follow previous Prophets is a disbeliever. 

This prerequisite should not be confusing because we follow this rule in all our businesses.  When the owner of the business assigns new manager, all the subordinates mut follow the new manager.  If anyone decides to reject the new manager and insists on only following the previous manager will be fired. In fact, even if a new manager is assigned and the previous manager is still working in the department, the previous manager must follow the new manager.

Therefore, if Allah sends new Messenger while a previously sent messenger is still alive, this previous messenger must follow the new Messenger and this command must have been made clear in the revelation received by the previous messenger.  This was a covenant that Allah took form all those whom He designated as prophets to mankind before they were even assigned.  This point is clear in verse 81 of Surat Al-Imran:

 

وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِيثَـٰقَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ لَمَآ ءَاتَيۡتُڪُم مِّن ڪِتَـٰبٍ۬ وَحِكۡمَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ جَآءَڪُمۡ رَسُولٌ۬ مُّصَدِّقٌ۬ لِّمَا مَعَكُمۡ لَتُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهِۦ وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُ ۥ‌ۚ قَالَ ءَأَقۡرَرۡتُمۡ وَأَخَذۡتُمۡ عَلَىٰ ذَٲلِكُمۡ إِصۡرِى‌ۖ قَالُوٓاْ أَقۡرَرۡنَا‌ۚ قَالَ فَٱشۡہَدُواْ وَأَنَا۟ مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ (٨١)  فَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ بَعۡدَ ذَٲلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ (٨٢)

“And (recall) when Allah took the Covenant of the Prophets, saying: “If I give you a book and wisdom then comes to you a Messenger confirming what is with you; you must believe in him and support him.” Allah said: “Do you affirm and accept My Covenant in this respect?” They said: “We affirm.” He said: “Then bear witness; and I am with you among the witnesses.” (81)  Then whoever turns back  after this, they are the rebellious.” (Al-Imran 3:81-82)

Rearding Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), these verses state in a very clear language, that Allah took the covenant from all prophets, from Adam to Jesus (peace by upon them all) that when He sends a messenger conforming what they have received, they should believe in him and support him and anyone who does not fulfill this covenant is rebellious and sinful.   Allah also tells us that they all agreed to this covenant and Allah confirmed that as their witness.

If all the Prophets agreed to follow Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), anyone who does not follow him after hearing about him, is declared by Allah as rebellious.    But for this to be just, previous revelations must have clear description of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to leave no ambiguity that he is the one designated by Allah as the seal of the Prophets.

Allah affirms in the Quran that the nature of the mission and the attributes of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) are clearly identified in both the Torah and the gospel (in the new and Old Testament) and this should remove any doubt about the legitimacy of His prophethood.  Allah says:

 

ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ ٱلۡأُمِّىَّ ٱلَّذِى يَجِدُونَهُ ۥ مَكۡتُوبًا عِندَهُمۡ فِى ٱلتَّوۡرَٮٰةِ وَٱلۡإِنجِيلِ يَأۡمُرُهُم بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَيَنۡہَٮٰهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنڪَرِ وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡخَبَـٰٓٮِٕثَ وَيَضَعُ عَنۡهُمۡ إِصۡرَهُمۡ وَٱلۡأَغۡلَـٰلَ ٱلَّتِى كَانَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ‌ۚ فَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ بِهِۦ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَٱتَّبَعُواْ ٱلنُّورَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ ۥۤ‌ۙ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ (١٥٧)

 

“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Injeel (Gospel), he commands them with goodness and forbids them from indecency; he makes lawful for them all that is good, and prohibits them all that is foul, he relieves them from their heavy burdens and from the shackles that were upon them. So those who believe in him, honor him, help him, and follow the light that has been sent down with him, it is they who are successful”. (Al-Araf 7:157)

Note that this command is addressed to the Jews and Christians, and it clearly states that the attributes of Prophet Mahammad (PBUH) is revealed to them in their books. So, when they reject him, they are actually rejecting part of their own religion and as we stated anyone who does this is condemned to Hell.

Allah did not only affirm that the nature of the message of Prophet Mohammad in the Torah and the Gospel, but He also affirmed that his physical attributes are clearly described for them to know him when they see him.  Allah says that the description is so detailed that anyone who sees him will recognize him as he recognizes his own children, Allah says in both Surat Al-Baqara (2: 146) and Al-An’am 6:20):

 

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ يَعۡرِفُونَهُ ۥ كَمَا يَعۡرِفُونَ أَبۡنَآءَهُمۡ‌ۖ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقً۬ا مِّنۡهُمۡ لَيَكۡتُمُونَ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُونَ (١٤٦)

“Those to whom We gave the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (Muhammad SAW) as they recognize their sons. But verily, a party of them conceal the truth while they know it.” (Al-Baqara 2:146)

 

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ يَعۡرِفُونَهُ ۥ كَمَا يَعۡرِفُونَ أَبۡنَآءَهُمُ‌ۘ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓاْ أَنفُسَہُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ (٢٠)

“Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) know him (i.e. Muhammad SAW) as they recognize their own sons. Those who brought loss to themselves will not believe.” (Al-An’am 6:20)

These verses emphasize that the description of prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in previous scriptures is so clear, and no one can hide it expect intentionally and thus who rejects him has brought major loss to himself.

Since all previous prophets were sent to their specific community, to remove any excuse that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was not sent to them, Allah made it clear that he is being sent to all nations and not limited to one as was the past. Allah directs his declaration to all mankind by saying:

 

قُلۡ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيۡڪُمۡ جَمِيعًا ٱلَّذِى لَهُ ۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۖ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحۡىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ‌ۖ فَـَٔامِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ٱلنَّبِىِّ ٱلۡأُمِّىِّ ٱلَّذِى يُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَڪَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَٱتَّبِعُوهُ لَعَلَّڪُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ (١٥٨)

“Say (O Muhammad SAW): “O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah — to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no God but He, He is the One Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the illiterate Prophet who believes in Allah and His Words], and follow him so that you be guided.” (Al-Araf 7: 158)

Based on the above, it should be clear that believing in Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is a key (six) perquisite for salvation and securing the promise of paradise.  This point is reinforced by the Prophet’s hadith: It is reported by Muslim that Abu Hurrirah reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

 

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ قَالَ: “وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لاَ يَسْمَعُ بِي أَحَدٌ مِنْ هذِهِ الأُمَّةِ يَهُودِيٌّ وَلاَ نَصْرَانِيٌّ، ثُمَّ يَمُوتُ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِالَّذِي أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ، إِلاَّ كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ”. رواه مسلم.

“By the one in whose hand is my soul, no one whether Jew or Christian who hears of me and die before believing in what I have been sent with, but he will be one of the people of the fire.

This point is important for those who engage in interfaith dialogues to ensure that they do not deceive others by suggesting to them that believing and following Prophet Mohammad is not essential in their salvation as long as they believe in one God and do righteous deeds.  Anyone who speaks on behalf of Allah must only present what Allah says and leave his own opinion aside. 

To reinforce this point Allah says that the religion of Islam is the only religion acceptable to Him:

وَمَنْ يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الْإِسْلامِ دِينًا فَلَنْ يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ [آل عمران:85].

“And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.” (Al-Imran 3:85) 

To ensure that no one interprets that Allah is speaking about Islam as the religion of all previous prophets and not only the religion of Islam that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Allah defined the religion of Islam by saying:

 

ٱلۡيَوۡمَ يَٮِٕسَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن دِينِكُمۡ فَلَا تَخۡشَوۡهُمۡ وَٱخۡشَوۡنِ‌ۚ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمَ دِينً۬ا‌ۚ

“This day, those who disbelieved have given up all hope of your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Al-Maeda 5:3)

 

This verse should leave no doubt that religion that Allah is considering as the only acceptable religion is the Islam that have been revealed and perfected for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  This is a key prerequisite (7th prerequisite) and that all other forms of Islam that were revealed to previous Messengers have been abrogated and there is now only Islam that Allah will accept from all those who have been informed about it.

The discussion is intended to clarify the issue of salvation for or Muslims to ensure that they are open about their belief an that they should never try to hide their belief.  But is it the responsibility for Muslims to identify for non- Muslims the nature of the message and the attributes of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) from their own books?   My views is, No for simple reason that the Prophet (PBUH) did not do this, but rather he (PBUH) actually discouraged Muslims form reading these books.

It reported by Ahmad that Jaber ibn Abdullah said that Omar ibn Al-Ktab said:

حديث أن عمر بن الخطاب أتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بكتاب أصابه من بعض أهل الكتب فغضب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: ” أمتهوكون فيها يا بن الخطاب والذي نفسي بيده لقد جئتكم بها بيضاء نقية لا تسألوهم عن شيء فيخبروكم بحق فتكذبوا به أو بباطل فتصدقوا به والذي نفسي بيده لو أن موسى صلى الله عليه وسلم كان حيا ما وسعه إلا أن يتبعني” حديث صحيح رواه أحمد عن جابر بن عبد الله،

“I went to the Prophet (PBUH) to tell him about a book I received from some of the people of the book but he became angry and said:   Are you uncertain O son of Khattāb? By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, I have come to you with the pure and clear proof.  You ask them and they either inform you with the truth and you deny it or they tell you a lie and you believe it.  

By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if Musa was alive today, he would have had no option by to follow me.”

Yes, Muslims may study the previous books as Academic exercise but not to justify the authenticity of our religions.   But my recommendation for anyone who is interested in this academic study is to start by studying the relevant accounts in the seerah on Christians and Jews who accepted Islam based on the information in their books.  They have identified the references.   Some of those people are:

The Monk Bahira

Salman Al- Farisi (سلمان الفارسي)

Waraqa ibn Nawfal

Abdullah ibn Salaam

And several others.

An example that I have presented in previous talk is the reference that was identified by Abdullah ibn Salaam (عبد اللد ابن سلام) who was one of the Jewish scholars who accepted Islam.   This was a reference in the the book of Isaiah 42 (سفر إشعياء 42) in the Old Testament:

.

1 “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.

2 He will not shout or cry out or raise his voice in the streets.

3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice.

4   He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”

5 This is what God the Lord says—the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it:

6 “I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness.  I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles,

7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

8 “I am the Lord; that is my name!  I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.

9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being, I announce them to you.”

10 Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them.

1 «هُوَذَا عَبْدِي الَّذِي أَعْضُدُهُ، مُخْتَارِي الَّذِي سُرَّتْ بِهِ نَفْسِي. وَضَعْتُ رُوحِي عَلَيْهِ فَيُخْرِجُ الْحَقَّ لِلأُمَمِ.

2 لاَ يَصِيحُ وَلاَ يَرْفَعُ وَلاَ يُسْمِعُ فِي الشَّارِعِ صَوْتَهُ

.3 قَصَبَةً مَرْضُوضَةً لاَ يَقْصِفُ، وَفَتِيلَةً خَامِدَةً لاَ يُطْفِئُ. إِلَى الأَمَانِ يُخْرِجُ الْحَقَّ.

4 لاَ يَكِلُّ وَلاَ يَنْكَسِرُ حَتَّى يَضَعَ الْحَقَّ فِي الأَرْضِ، وَتَنْتَظِرُ الْجَزَائِرُ شَرِيعَتَهُ».

5 هكَذَا يَقُولُ اللهُ الرَّبُّ، خَالِقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَنَاشِرُهَا، بَاسِطُ الأَرْضِ وَنَتَائِجِهَا، مُعْطِي الشَّعْبِ عَلَيْهَا نَسَمَةً، وَالسَّاكِنِينَ فِيهَا رُوحًا:

6 «أَنَا الرَّبَّ قَدْ دَعَوْتُكَ بِالْبِرِّ، فَأُمْسِكُ بِيَدِكَ وَأَحْفَظُكَ وَأَجْعَلُكَ عَهْدًا لِلشَّعْبِ وَنُورًا لِلأُمَمِ،

7 لِتَفْتَحَ عُيُونَ الْعُمْيِ، لِتُخْرِجَ مِنَ الْحَبْسِ الْمَأْسُورِينَ، مِنْ بَيْتِ السِّجْنِ الْجَالِسِينَ فِي الظُّلْمَةِ.

8 «أَنَا الرَّبُّ هذَا اسْمِي، وَمَجْدِي لاَ أُعْطِيهِ لآخَرَ، وَلاَ تَسْبِيحِي لِلْمَنْحُوتَاتِ.

9 هُوَذَا الأَوَّلِيَّاتُ قَدْ أَتَتْ، وَالْحَدِيثَاتُ أَنَا مُخْبِرٌ بِهَا. قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْبُتَ أُعْلِمُكُمْ بِهَا».

10 غَنُّوا لِلرَّبِّ أُغْنِيَةً جَدِيدَةً، تَسْبِيحَهُ مِنْ أَقْصَى الأَرْضِ. أَيُّهَا الْمُنْحَدِرُونَ فِي الْبَحْرِ وَمِلْؤُهُ وَالْجَزَائِرُ وَسُكَّانُهَا،

11 Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops.

11 لِتَرْفَعِ الْبَرِّيَّةُ وَمُدُنُهَا صَوْتَهَا، الدِّيَارُ الَّتِي سَكَنَهَا قِيدَارُ. لِتَتَرَنَّمْ سُكَّانُ سَالِعَ. مِنْ رُؤُوسِ الْجِبَالِ لِيَهْتِفُوا.

Comment:

Sela (سالع) is a mountain in Medina in Saudi Arabia. Sela means “sliced” because the mountain looks as if it is sliced several times. (This is why the Jews immigrated from Syria to Madina to be there when this Prophet comes)

Kedar: In the son of Ishmael, the great grandfather of the tribes in Mecca.

سفر التكوين الإصحاح 25ا: 13:(وهذه أسماء بني إسماعيل بأسمائهم حسب مواليدهم: نبايوت بكر إسماعيل وقيدار وأدبائيل ومبسام……).

Genesis 25: 13 “These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah”.

Quotes from the Bible

The Jews expectancy of three personalities after Moses (Christ, Elias and that Prophet):

“And this is the record of John when the Jews sent priests and Levities from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.  And they asked him, What then?  Art thou Elias? And He said, I am not.  Art Thou that Prophet? And he answered No” (St. John 1: 19-21).

“Jesus later told the disciples that John the Baptist was Elias” (St. Matthew 17: 10-13).

Moses informing the Jews of another Prophet from their Brethren:

“And the Lord said unto me; I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and shall speak unto them all that I shall Command him” (Deuteronomy 18:18). 

Some suggest that this verse refers to Jesus, but this cannot be accurate because of the major differences between Jesus and Moses. Deuteronomy 18: 20-22 are interesting to examine because they inform the Jews not to be afraid of false prophets because any false prophet will be put to death.

Also, these verses are more befitting to describe Mohammad (PBUH) then Jesus for several reasons. Mohammad who is an Ishmaelite is a brethren of Moses who is an Israelite.  Mohammad and Moses have very similar birth, death and life. In spite all attempts by the Jews to kill Mohammad, they never succeeded. Also note that every chapter in the Quran, except one, starts with the words: “In the name of God”.

Jesus informing his Disciples of the Coming of a Prophet:

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement: of sin, because they believe not in me; Of righteousness, because I go to my father, and ye see me no more; Of judgement, because the prince of this world is judged.  I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.  Howbeit when he, the spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you” (St. John 16: 7-14).

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father, he shall testify of me” (St. John 15: 27).  

Whom did Jesus prophesy of his upcoming in these verses?  It is unfortunate that the exact name that Jesus used is lost and what we have is just an English translation of such a name.  (Examples of the translation of names: the word “Christ” is derived from the Greek “Christos” which is translated from the word “Messiah” in the Aramaic language, the correct translation of Messiah is “the anointer”.  Another example is the name of the leading disciple “Peter” whose correct name is “Simon”, Jesus told him you are like a “Kefus” which means “rock or stone”, the word “rock” was translated to Greek as “Petros” which was changed in English to “Peter”.  This mean that during their life time neither Jesus heard the name Christ, nor Simon heard the name Peter.)

Most Christians suggest that Jesus was speaking of the Holy Ghost.  This, however, appears to be inappropriate because Jesus said that “if I go not away, he will not come”, and several verses in the bible suggest that the holy ghost existed with Jesus and with others before Jesus:  “Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” and “His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:42, 67).

Also, Jesus said that the Comforter will have many things to say, what things did the Holy Spirit say in the last 2000 years.  Note also the use of the singular pronoun “he” which suggest that Jesus was referring to a Prophet.  In the Bible the title Spirit of God or Spirit of Truth refers to Prophets (See First Epistle of John 4:1).  Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is the only Prophet that came after Jesus who testified about him, who glorified him, and who spoke only what he heard from Allah through the Archangel Gabriel. (See verses in the Quran referring to Jesus’s birth, life and message).

 The Escape of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina and the First Battle in Islam:

“The burden upon Arabia. In the forest of Arabia shall ye lodge.  The inhabitants of the land of Te-ma (Medina) brought water to him that was thirsty; they prevented with their bread him that fled. For they fled from the swords, from the drawn swords, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.  For thus has the Lord said unto me, within a year, and all the glory of Kedar (the people of Mecca who are the descendants of Kedar, the son of Ishmael) shall fail. And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar shall be diminished (Isaiah 21: 13-17).

The Prophet’s Victorious Return to Mecca with 10,000 Muslims:

“And Moses said, the Lord came from Sinai (reference to Moses), and rose up from Seir unto them (reference to Jesus birth place), He shined forth from Mount Paran (Mecca), and he came with ten thousands saints.  From his right hand went a fiery law for them.  He loved the people; all his saints are in his hand: and they sat down at his feet; every one shall receive of his words.”  (Deuteronomy 33: 2-3).

The Change of the Prophethood from the Israelites to the Ishmaelits:

“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be” (Genesis 49: 10).

“Jesus said: Therefore, say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing the fruits thereof.”  (St. Matthew 21: 43).

The Quran is revealed in a language other than the Israelite language and was revealed piecemeal in 23 years rather than once:

“For with stammering lips, and another tongue will he speak to this people.  But the word of the Lord was unto them percept upon percept, percept upon percept; line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah 28: 11,13).
