Are You One of Awliya Allah (أَوۡلِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ)!
If you ask any Muslim, are you a Wali of Allah? The likely answer is “No”. Probably, the reason for this answer is that Muslims do not understand the definition of the Wali of Allah. For some reason, it is creeped in our minds that a Wali of Allah is like a holy person or a theological position. A person that has a special look with a halo that shows his spirituality. These are false images.
All committed Muslims, men or women, should consider themselves as Awliya of Allah since they are believers and have Taqwa. A Wali of Allah is one who declares Allah as His guardian and protector. This should apply to every committed Muslim. If a Muslim does not consider him/herself as Wali of Allah, he/she must ask him/herself who is his/her Wali? The Quran states that a person is either a Wali of Allah or a Wali of Satan. Allah says:
“A group was led to guidance and a group was established on misguidance for they choose the devils for Awliya (guardians) instead of Allah and they thought that they are rightly guided.” (Al-Araf 7:30)
“Indeed, the Awliya of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve. (62) Those who believe and have Taqwa (63) For them are glad tidings in the life of the present world and in the Hereafter. There is no changing in the Words of Allah, this is indeed the supreme success.” (Yunus: 10:62-64)
“What have they taken as Awliya (guardians) instead of Him? Indeed, Allah is the Wali (guardian) and He Who gives life to the dead and He Who has power over all things. (Al-Shura 42:9)
“Those who have believed fight for the cause of Allah; and those who have disbelieved fight for the cause of Satan. So, fight the Awliya of Satan, Indeed The guile of Satan is weak.” (Al-Nisa 4:76)
There is no special sign or a halo for the Wali of Allah. Even the Prophet (PBUH) did not have any special appearance that made him look different from his companions. Abu Dhar and Abu Hurrirah said:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to sit among his companions and when a stranger would come, he would not know which one he was until he asked. (Abu Dawud)
Please note that the term Wali (ولى) in the Arabic language has two meanings:
- A powerful person who serves the role of being guardian and protector, and
- A person who enjoys the guardianship and protection of the powerful.
Therefore, when Allah is your Wali, Allah is your guardian and protector, and this also means that you are a Wali of Allah because Allah is your guardian and protector.
For a Muslim to be a Wali of Allah (I.e., Allah is His guardian and protector) he/she must possess belief and Taqwa. Allah says:
“Indeed, the Awliya of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve. (62) Those who believe and have Taqwa. (63) For them there is the good news in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. There is no changing in the Words of Allah, this is indeed the supreme triumph.” (Yunus: 10:62-64)
Since belief and taqwa are the two conditions to be a Wali of Allah, we need to define the attributes of those who are believers and have Taqwa from the Quran. The following Ayat defines the traits of the believers:
- Ayat 2 to 4 of Surat Al-Anfal (8),
- Ayat 71 of Surat Al-Tawba (9),
- Ayat 1 to 9 of Surat Al-Mumenoon (23).
The traits of those who have Taqwa are given in the following Ayat
- Ayat 3, 4, 177 and 183 of Surat Al-Baqara (2),
- Ayat 16 and 17 and 133 to 135 of Surat Al-E-Imran (3).
The following are two examples of the Ayat that list the traits of those who are believers:
“Certainly, the believers are those:
- Whose hearts are filled with awe when Allah is mentioned, and
- When His revelations are recited to them, it increases their faith and,
- On their Lord they place their trust.
- Those who establish prayer and
- Who spend (in charity) from what We have given them.
Those are the true believers.” (Al-Anfal 8:2-4)
“The Believers are surely successful.
- Those who are reverent (have Khoshoo) in their prayers.
- Who avoid vain talk.
- Who are active in working for paying the Zakat.
- Who guard their private parts. except with their spouses and whomever their right hands may control (in their case) they are free from blame, but those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors.
- Who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants.
- And who carefully maintain their prayers. (Al-Munenoon 23:1-9)
The following are two examples of the Ayat that list the traits of those who have Taqwa
“It is not righteousness (benevolence) that you turn your faces towards the East or West; but it is righteousness to
- Believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers.
- Spend of your wealth, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves;
- Be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity,
- Fulfill the contracts which you have made; and
- Be firm and patient, in pain and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic.
Such are the people of truth and those who have Taqwa (Mutaqoun)”. (Al-Baqara 2:177)
“Race towards forgiveness from your Lord and a garden whose width is the spans the heavens and the earth. It has been prepared for those who have Taqwa, (133), who:
- Spend (for Allah’s sake) in prosperity and adversity,
- Restrain their anger and forgive people. And Allah loves those who are good in their deeds, (134)
- When they commit a shameful act or wrong themselves, remember Allah, then, seek forgiveness for their sins and who is there to forgive sins except Allah? and do not persist in what they have done, knowingly.” (Al-E-Imran 3: 133-135)
Combining the traits of those who are believers and those who have Taqwa, would give us the traits of Awliya Allah. These traits are.
- Believe in six elements of belief.
- Perform prayers with Khoshooh (earnest humility in the heart).
- Fast
- Give Charity.
- Fulfill their promises pledges and covenant.
- Control their anger and forgive.
- Repent if did wrong.
- Chaste (abstaining from extramarital activities)
- Trust and rely on Allah.
- Abstain from major sins and shameful deeds.
Based on this list, all committed Muslims satisfy the requirement of being Awliya Allah. But not all Awliya Allah have the same rank. The Awliya Allah can be ranked in two groups: moderate, and elite. The elite group is those who are foremost in perfecting all their good deeds. We should all strive to be among the elite group. Allah evaluates people regarding the Quality (أحسن) of their deeds more than the quantity (أكثر) of them, as Allah says:
“And He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days – and His Throne was n the water – that He might test you who among you is best in deeds.” (Hud 11:7)
“We made what is on earth as an adornment for it, so that We test who among them are best in deeds. “(Al-Kahf 18:7)
“Indeed, those who have believed and did righteous deeds. Certainly, We sdo not waste the reward of those who are best in deeds. “(Al-Kahf 18:30)
“The One who created death and life, so that He may test you who among you is best in deeds.” (Al-Mulk 67:2)
While every serious Muslim should know that he/she is a Wali of Allah, the competition among Muslims should be in the ranking of the Wali. If we consider the trait of giving charity which is one of the traits of Awliya, it can vary and thus differentiating the ranking of Awliya Allah. The minimum level is the charity payment is Zakat. But an elite ranking of Awlyia are those who, even when they are in poverty, are willing to meet the financial needs of others before their own needs. Allah says:
“They give others preference over themselves even though they are in poverty. Those who are saved from the greed of their hearts are the successful.” (Al-Hashr 59:9)
We have the example of Khalif Au Bakr who once gave all his money for the sake of Allah. And an even higher-ranking regarding charity giving than Abu Bakr is the Prophet (PBUH) who was not only willing to give all what he has for charity, but he was also willing to borrow money from others and put himself in debt to give money to anyone who asks.
Also, while all committed Muslims perform prayers, they differ in the quantity and quality of their prayers. Some perform only the obligatory prayers and meet the quality requirement of Khoshooh (Earnest humility in the heart) that ensures the acceptability of the prayers. But others perform the obligatory prayers plus the non-obligatory prayers (e.g., Sunnah and night prayers) and their Khoshooh’s level is very high such that they would not even notice the sting of a wasp when they are in the prayers.
If I choose one trait to focus on improving its quality, it will be the Khoshooh in the prayers. The high level of Khoshooh will help you reach a high rating in the other traits. Because the Khoshooh in the prayer is very important, Allah made it the first condition for the success of the believers. Allah said:
“The Believers are surely successful. (1) Those who have Khoshooh in their prayers. (Al-Munenoon 23:1-2)
Performing the prayers with proper Khoshooh should reflect three specific qualities that are unique to those who pray. These are: never be impatient, discontented or miser. Allah says in Surat al-Maarij:
Indeed, man was created very impatient; (19) Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; (20) And miserly when good touches him. (21) Except those who perform prayers. (Al-Maarij 70:19-22)
The Khoshooh involves both the heart and the knowledge. The heart reflects the reality of feeling humbleness and an awe of standing in front of Allah. Knowledge is critical for truly knowing Allah and thus those who have knowledge truly know Allah. Allah said:
“Have you not seen that Allah has sent down water from the sky? Then We produce with fruits having different colors. And among the mountains there are streaks white and red of different colors and others are utterly black; (27) And among humans and beasts and cattle, there are those having different colors, as well. Those who truly fear Allah among His slaves are those who are knowledgeable. Indeed, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Forgiving.” (Fatir 35:27-28)
The connection between knowledge and Khoshooh is clearly stated in Surat Al-Isra. Allah says:
“Indeed, those who were given knowledge beforehand, when it is recited to them, fall down on their faces in prostration” (107) And say: “Glory to our Lord! Truly the promise of our Lord was sure to be fulfilled!” (108) They fall down on their faces in tears, and it increases their Khoshooh.” (Al-Isra 17:107-109)
The degree of Khoshooh in prayer is a measure of the degree of recognition of Allah and His presence in your life.
